RAIN TAKES HAGERSTOWN'S LATE MODEL SPEEDWEEK OPENER
by Bob Vores
The announcement that no one wanted to hear but expected came at 7:20 p.m. this evening.
"Tonight's racing has been cancelled. Rain in the area does not show ending any time soon."
Hagerstown Speedway's opener of the 2nd Annual Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek Series was cancelled due to the weather and will not be rescheduled. Rain checks are good for 18 months. It is the sixth program lost already this season.
"We were definitely hoping to get this speedweek program completed as it and the entire series last season was one of the area's best overall programs for late models," said Promoter Frank Plessinger. "The weather sure hasn't been too cooperative this year. It's only June and this already is one more lost program than all last season."
With Hagerstown Speedway and the surrounding area dry as a bone for the past two days while rain has been all around, the largest mass on radar formed just earlier to the west and headed directly towards the speedway with precipitation beginning to fall after the gates had opened. Fifty-two late models and 14 pure stocks were assembled for the program.
The speedway returns to action again on Saturday with the Ernie D's pure stocks taking the stage for the 20-lap 15th Annual Cornett Tribute event along with the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman in their Hoosier Daddy 25-lap event. The late models will also be in action.
