First & foremost the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek presented by CenturyLink would like to wish all of our competitors, sponsors, tracks, staff & fans a very Happy Holiday and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
The Appalachian Mountain Speedweek presented by CenturyLink is proud to release the 2012 schedule that will make up the 4th installment of the popular early summer event. The series schedule will see a little different look in 2012, as it will for the first time kick-off on a Friday and end the following Wednesday. Also, the series decided to cut the schedule down by one event for this year’s version of the 4 year old speedweek.
This year’s addition will start off on Friday, June 1st by making its first visit to the racy 3/8 mile Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, PA. The series will then head straight down Interstate 81to Hagerstown (MD) and Winchester (VA) speedways for Saturday and Sunday series races. Both of these first class venues have been with the series since its inception in 2009. Monday, June 4th will see the series make its second appearance at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Markleysburg, PA followed by a first ever stop in Northern Cambria, PA at the popular Dog Hollow Speedway. The series will then conclude on Wednesday, June 6th at the Fabulous Lincoln Speedway with the running of the $7,000 to win Charlie Grinestaff Memorial followed by the series awards presentation which will take place on the front stretch in front of the fans. This is the 4th consecutive year Lincoln Speedway has hosted the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek presented by CenturyLink.
“I’m really excited about our 2012 schedule” said speedweek co-promoter Kurt Smith. “I really think we put together the best schedule we have had in the four years we have been doing this. JR (Keifer) and I have really been working hard over the last few months trying to make sure we could provide the best speedweek we could in this trying economic time not only for the competitors, but also for the tracks & fans. I want to thank all the tracks that called about a date for this year, unfortunately some of them were just logistically too far away and we just couldn’t require the teams that support us year in and year out the travel the distance it would have taken to reach some of the areas wanting to race with us. The past couple years the hot weather has taken a toll on equipment, drivers & crews as we got down towards the end of the week, so JR and I decided that maybe it was best cut the series down by a race and see how that works this year. In the future with a better economy we’ll look at the seven race schedule again but for now I am very happy with what we have put together” added Smith.
“I am excited to have races scheduled at Big Diamond & Dog Hollow” said co-promoter JR Keifer. “We really have a good core of tracks and these two speedways will fit right in. I want to thank Lisa at Hagerstown and the fine staff at Winchester for their continued support. They have been with us from the start and always jump right in the following year. A great big Thank You to Alan Kreitzer along with Bob & Don Leiby at Lincoln for offering to host the series finale and awarding us the opportunity to present our awards after this year’s event. I really look forward to returning to Roaring Knob also, it is shaping up to be another great week” added JR.
The Speedweek will be taking part in the Motorsports 2012 show taking place January 20, 21 & 22 at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oak, PA. Make plans to stop by and say hello.
